Born Again: A New Way of Living, Not a Religion
For most of my life, I didn’t get it.
The phrase “born again” sounded strange—maybe even a little over-the-top. I used to make jokes, calling them “bored again Christians.” I thought it was just another label, another group of religious folks trying to look holy while living empty lives.
But then everything changed.
Because being “born again” isn’t about joining a religion. It’s about stepping into a whole new way of life—a new heart, a new mindset, a new purpose. It's about becoming alive for the very first time.
In John 3, Jesus tells Nicodemus, a respected religious leader, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again” (John 3:3). Nicodemus was confused—he had status, knowledge, and spiritual tradition. But Jesus wasn’t offering another ritual. He was offering transformation.
Being born again means something supernatural takes place inside you. You go from knowing about God to actually knowing Him. It’s not about trying harder to be good—it’s about becoming someone new.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” —2 Corinthians 5:17
I used to think being “saved” or “born again” was for the people who had totally messed up. The truth is, we’ve all messed up. Sin doesn’t always look like a crisis—it can be pride, bitterness, selfishness, addiction to approval, or trying to control everything ourselves. We’re all in need of grace.
When I finally surrendered, I didn’t get a list of rules—I got a new heart.
I started seeing people differently. I had peace where there used to be anxiety. I started wanting to forgive, to love, to live with purpose. Not because I had to, but because I was different.
That’s what Jesus does when He moves in. It’s not self-help. It’s not behavior modification. It’s resurrection.
And I want to say this gently, especially if you’ve been in church your whole life: being around religion doesn’t make you born again. Going to church, serving, even reading the Bible—those are all good things, but they don’t replace the moment you say, “Jesus, I need You. I want You. Come and make me new.”
Titus 3:5 says, “He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.”
That’s the miracle. That’s the invitation.
If you’ve ever wondered if there’s more to life—there is. If you’ve ever felt far from God—He’s closer than you think. If you’ve ever thought you weren’t “religious enough”—good news: Jesus didn’t come to start a religion. He came to bring you back to life.
I’m not “bored again.” I’m born again. And I’ll never be the same.
